Jordan is perhaps best known for its historic sites and ruins including the UNSECO World Heritage Site of Petra. Many historic ruins, castles and towns are dotted throughout Jordan including the Umm ar-Rasas religious ruins and the Umm el-Jimal village ruins, named by locals as the ‘Black Gem of the Desert’. Amman, the capital of Jordan, offers an excellent blend of historic sites and modern attractions to suit visitors of all tastes. Some of the best historical attractions in the city include the large Roman Amphitheatre and the Jabal al-Qal’a Citadel, while those interested in further exploring the history of the region may want to visit the large Jordan Museum in central Amman. The capital can also be a vibrant place and has a lively nightlife scene as well as many thriving restaurants and shops including those on Abdali Boulevard in the new downtown district.
Flights to Jordan
Jordan’s main airport is Queen Alia International Airport, situated roughly 30km outside the center of Amman. This airport serves over 7 million passengers each year and has recently benefited from state-of-the-art terminal renovation work to make it one of the Middle East’s finest airports. King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba is another popular airport in the country and an ideal entry point to the country’s coast. Many airlines are able to provide cheap flights to Jordan at both airports from various places around the world. Nationals of select countries including UAE, Qatar and Bahrain are able to enter Jordan on a visa-free basis, but most nationals will be required to get a visa.
When to Visit Jordan
Despite its Middle Eastern location, Jordan can in fact experience very cold winters where snowfall is not uncommon. Between June and August the temperatures can reach searing highs, while the most popular period for travelers is between March and May when temperatures are ideal.
