Kotobukitei Ryokan at Yunoyama, Mie

Recommend this place. Despite the signs around town (and ryokan) that Yunoyama is not the tourist drawcard it used to be, the facilities, food and location of this ryokan were extremely enjoyable. The welcome and staff were great. The room was spacious and had a balcony. Dinner in our room and breakfast downstairs were perhaps better than the more expensive ryokan we stayed in the following night (another city). I only used the general bath (I think there's a facility you can book and pay extra for) and it was very nice with an indoor and outdoor pool with a mountain view. Great location for walkers/climbers or ropeway with access to tracks/ropeway just a few mins walk from memory. While overnight is enough time for a visit, I fail to see why this is not a more popular place for overnighters from Yokkaichi or Nagoya. A walk up the river in the afternoon, an overnight stay at Kotobukitei, and a gondola up the mountain with a walk around the top made for a fantastic trip.

Hot Spring Hospitality

This is a traditional sort of hot spring ryokan, or inn. It is located on a steep hillside at the foot of Mt. Gozaisho, within easy walking distance of the Gozaisho Ropeway (cable car). The staff are very friendly and the service is fine. We all (there were 8 in our group) found the food to be excellent. Dinner was kaiseki-style Japanese cuisine, and there were perhaps 20 dishes in all. Breakfast was buffet-style. Again, everything was excellent. The hot spring is not of the smelly, sulfuric sort. Rather, it contains minerals that leave the skin soft and smooth. Our rooms on the 5th floor also had baths, but I would recommend using the large, communal baths on the 2nd floor instead. There are rotenburo (outdoor baths) as well. The hotel has a lovely garden, which was being improved and enlarged during our visit. The hotel is located in Yunoyama, a hot spring town that seems to have seen better days. A fresh and fast running mountain river cascades through the center of town. There was fresh snow during our stay. There are busses to the town of Yunoyama. The location of the hot spring town makes it ideal for hikers and mountaineers.

A nice autumn getaway

Nice trip with good food!
Little bit old, but very nice staff.
I visited again 2 weeks later to hike up the mountain.
I came back here and payed to use the hot springs only.
They remembered me and let me use the shuttle bus back to the station.
I was very thankful because I had no way back.
Thanks for the hospitality!
