Thanksgiving Weekend Getaway

We just returned from a lovely Thanksgiving getaway to Highland Lake Inn & Resort. Our room was in the Lodge. The room was spacious and the king size bed was so comfortable! We also enjoyed spending time by the fireplace in the well appointed common room.
Breakfast was included at Seasons Restaurant just a short walk away from the Lodge. The breakfast was served buffet style with a nice selection of eggs, grits, pancakes, biscuits and breakfast meats. Our server, Susan, was very welcoming and remembered our juice preferences after the first day.
The grounds on the resort are beautiful despite the many trees that were felled as a result of Hurricane Helene.
We highly recommend the resort for a couples getaway!

Lovely property

We were looking for a place to escape the urban pace and ongoing home renovations. We chose this lovely retreat and we are glad we did. It is about a 3 hour drive from Atlanta, just right for us. The grounds are lovely and the welcome lodge had a downhome mountain feel. We immediately felt at home.
We stayed in the Woodward House and upgraded to the Hummingbird Suite. It was nicely appointed with a gas log fireplace, old school coffee pot, nice shower/tub with skylight and a nice jacuzzi.
After unpacking we were tired and ready to relax. We ordered "take out" from the only restaurant on the property (Seasons). We were stunned by the small portion sizes and high prices for the entrees. I ordered the scallops and received three of them for a price of $38.00. They threw in a little spinach and called it an entree. Very disappointing because it was overpriced and we were hungry. Thankfully, we brought along some of our own snacks.
The grounds are lovely with cultivated and wild flowers blooming everywhere. There is a small lake (30 acres) with kayaks and a dock. There are religious icons everywhere so the owners or previous owners must have been very religious. However, growing up Catholic, it was not offensive.
Our second night there we decided to eat at Seasons again. We made a reservation and were promptly seated. I had steak and it was $55.00 (prime Atlanta restaurant prices). The meal with drinks, wine and one dessert was $250 for two people. That is high by any measure and we did not eat another meal there except for breakfast, which is included with the lodging.
It is only a few miles to Flat Rock (not much to see there) and Hendersonville, which had a mountain town feel but was surprisingly large. We found mineral and gem museums, miniature golf, coffee shops and enjoyed people watching.
The breakfast was included with the room and it was generally pretty good. Served buffet-style with sausage, eggs, bacon, biscuits, yogurt, fruit and typical breakfast fare, it was a nice way to start the day, especially since we did not get a bill for the meal (same restaurant).
Overall, a very pleasant stay and lovely people on property. It was charming, quiet and the suite was spacious. We will likely stay here again but bring our own food and coffee maker. The old school drip coffee maker did not make coffee to our standards in the room. However, lovely property with peaceful surroundings.

Weekend unwind

Just what we needed for a weekend getaway! Enjoyed the brunch at Seasons, and the musical at Flat Rock playhouse. We definitely will be back for our third, fourth and perhaps a fifth time too!
The lodge was perfect for what we wanted. The maintenance crew even started us a fire out in the fire ring. Awesome place to stay for the weekend or even longer!

A peaceful, beautiful place!

My daughter and I stayed in a little cabin. It was the perfect size for us. The bathroom was spacious and very clean. The refrigerator worked well. I loved sitting on the front porch early in the morning. We both love to swim, so we love the swimming pool. It's very clean. We had fun paddle boating on the lake. This is one of the most peaceful places we've ever stayed.

Historic shouldn't mean old and run down.

When you read the description of the poolside historic cottages, it should be described as old and rundown cottage behind wild unkempt bushes. I use a walker and Periwinkle had not one square inch of level ground inside and outside of the property.
The kitchen was fairly well equipped and the rooms, towels, and sheets were clean. Not one bathroom had an an upgraded shower. The tub was small, slanted, and old. The shower head was small and didn't move nor could it be handheld. The mattress left us hoping we'd be home soon.
We had Thanksgiving dinner at Seasons. It was a generous buffet. Our waitress was friendly. She served us a variety of alcoholic beverages and kept our plates and glasses cleared away. It was still a Buffett. When the bill came it recommended a 25 percent tip. I found this a bit excessive.
Really sorry. The cabins need some upgrades to be brought into the 21st century. The grounds need tons of maintenance. The steps into the. Cottage we're starting to rot and were uneven and crooked.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re sorry that your experience with the Periwinkle Cottage did not meet your expectations. We appreciate your compliments about the cleanliness of the cottage and the friendly service at our Thanksgiving buffet. Your thoughts on the recommended tip are also noted. Following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we are continuing to restore and improve our grounds, and your feedback will help guide these efforts. We have also sent a response via email to address your concerns more directly.
