Art and charm.

Very nice establishment, close to the port, near the pedestrian area.
Pleasant and multilingual staff.
Nice and neat decoration, the rooms are associated with local characters, artists, writers. The life of the artist is present in decorative objects.
The terrace has a panorama of the harbour and a very pleasant jaccusi.
The breakfast room is a very nice tea room. Breakfast is plentiful and balanced. The service is efficient and available.
The assets of this establishment are numerous, location, quiet near the port and next to the Museum of Decorative Arts.
We highly recommend.

Lovely old hotel with friendly staff

The hotel is right in the centre of the old town and ,Akers visiting the local area very-easy. The hotel itself is lovely and the view fromm the rooftop great the room we had was on the fifth floor and had its own balcony. My only gripe was the AC wasn’t cold enough

The BEST option in Ciudad Vieja and for Buquebus

If staying in Ciudad Vieja or near the Buquebus terminal (8 min walk), this is the BEST place to be. The owners of Alma have seen to every detail in rooms and in common areas. Each guest room is decorated to honor a writer -- ours was a famous nature writer so was painted green with beautiful wooden furniture, nature prints, and an old typewriter. It is small, but comfortable and nice. At the roof top (6th floor) there is a small hot tub which we didn't use but was very clean. There is a 360 degree view here and we enjoyed a spectacular sunset over the harbor while sipping the white wine they provided. Breakfast service was lovely and the food was good. The only real drawback is the ciudad vieja itself. After hours, at least on the Wed evening we were there, there were very few restaurants open and it was a bit seedy. The hotel itself is very safe (it is always locked and a man lets you in/out), and honestly I didn't feel unsafe outside. But some might, particularly solo travelers, and unfortunately there is no restaurant at the Alma. They did, however, say that it is fine to bring in food.

Exceptional Stay in Old Town Montevideo

Excellent experience. Botique hotel with ~15 rooms allows the staff to get to know you. Location is walkable to everything you want to see in the old town. Breakfast was freshly prepared and deliciously, offering fruit, breads, croissants, ham, cheese, eggs, yogurt, fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee. Interior is well decorated. Contains a library with a great selection of books in multiple languages. Rooftop terrace has jacuzzi with great view of the city and sunsets over the water. Only downside is open air interior stairwell can let in some of the smells of the surrounding city. Although it is in old town, which is covered in graffiti, we felt safe walking everywhere we went from 8am to midnight.

A good option.

As we approached the Alma Boutique Hotel past graffiti and refuse lined streets, we wondered what we had signed up for. However the Hotel was quite an oasis from the streets. We wanted to stay close or in the old town and glad we did as compared the more modern hotels further out.
The Alma Hotel only has 15 rooms, all unique, and obviously some are better and more spacious than others. We “scored” the Don Jose room on level 4, which was quite small and at the back, with audible toilet noise from the room above.
The bathroom while spacious had a squirt from all sides rainwater shower head past its best days.
Level 1 has a spacious library with comfy seating and a good place to take a break and read.
Breakfast is served at ground level and is quite an offer with cooked eggs to compliment. Fresh squeezed OJ was well received.
Each evening we made use of the terrace for drinks, nuts and sunset.
The highlight to offset the impending need for some maintenance was the staff. To a person they were happy and helpful, and appeared to really enjoy practising their English language skills.
