When is Dubai International Airport closing its runway?
The Dubai airport’s southern runway will be closed between April 16 and May 30, 2019. Due to the complicated nature of closing the runway, the closure has been meticulously planned so the dates are very, very unlikely to be adjusted.
The airport is one of the busiest in the world; almost 90 million people passed through it in 2018.
Why is Dubai International Airport closing its southern runway?
Dubai airport will close its southern runway for 45 days for essential repairs and resurfacing works. The airport handles more than 400,000 flights a year so is bound to have suffered some wear and tear! There’s never a good time to do this, but the airport is trying to minimize disruption as much as possible.
The closure was announced in early 2018 to give airlines time to make contingency plans.
What will happen to my flight when the southern runway closes?
It depends on the airline you’re flying with. Emirates, Dubai’s national airline, is reducing its number of flights by around 25%, and putting 48 aircraft temporarily out of action. Some airlines – including Dubai’s other airline, flyDubai – will move flights from Dubai International Airport to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) to minimize disruption to its passengers.
Check with your airline well in advance to find out what’s happening with your flight.
