Emirates checked baggage allowance

Emirates has two checked luggage policies: "weight" and "piece". Which one applies to you depends not only on your cabin class, but also on your landing and departure destinations.

For flights outside of the Americas and Africa, your baggage will be subject to the "weight concept", meaning that you can travel with as many pieces of luggage as you like, but their collective weight mustn't exceed the prescribed allowance allocated by your travel class (and each piece may not exceed 32kg).

If you are travelling within the Americas or Africa, you'll be working to the "piece concept", meaning you'll only be able to bring a certain number of bags with you, and each will have a maximum weight limit.

Below is a breakdown of what bags you can bring in the different fare classes.

Top tip

Buying extra baggage allowance (weight, size or pieces) online with Emirates can save you up to 50% compared to buying it at the airport

Emirates checked luggage fees

Fees can be easily avoided by ensuring that you pay for any excess weight, size or number of items in advance of boarding your flight. Emirates customers are able to pay online through 'Manage My Booking' to cover any excess baggage costs. The price depends on your flight route, but charges start from 15USD per kilo and 100USD per item. Check here for a comprehensive breakdown.

Should you arrive at the airport with too many bags, or bags which are overweight or oversized, fees will apply. These vary depending on your route and fare class but begin at 75USD.

What else should I know about Emirates' baggage allowance policies?

All airlines have their quirks, and Emirates is no different. Here are a couple of additional things to be aware of when booking baggage with Emirates.

  • If you're flying from Brazil, customers are able to bring up to 10kg of cabin baggage (rather than 7kg).

  • You can buy extra baggage allowance on adult and child tickets, but not on infant tickets.

  • While you can pay to bring as many bags with you as you'd like, if you take more than 15, Emirates may have to send some of the pieces on different flights from the one you're booked on, meaning they may not arrive in your destination at the same time as you.

  • If you are taking an interline flight, i.e. flights which are on the same ticket as your Emirates flights but are operated by another airline and do not have an Emirates flight number, baggage allowances may differ from what's outlined here. Check Emirates' interline partner baggage allowances to clarify your limits.

FAQs

Yes! Children over two years old get the same allowance as adults. If you're travelling with an infant, there is a separate allowance depending on their ticket fare. Generally, you will be permitted to take one carry‑cot or one fully collapsible stroller into the cabin if there's room. If not, they'll be checked into the hold.

In some circumstances, yes. If you’re an Emirates Skywards Platinum, Gold, or Silver member, you could be eligible for extra baggage allowance on routes that use the "weight concept". If travelling on "piece concept" routes on Emirates flights only, Emirates Skywards Platinum and Gold members are eligible for 1 additional piece of checked baggage at 23kg per piece in Economy Class and 32kg per piece in Business Class and First Class over the ticketed limit.

Yes! However, this is quite an expensive way to get more luggage, but if you’re feeling flush, why not! First and business class passengers are allowed two pieces of carry-on luggage, a briefcase (no bigger than 45x35x20cm) and either a garment bag or handbag (maximum 55x38x20cm). Each piece shouldn’t weigh more than 7kg. Sign up for promotional emails with the airline and keep an eye out for any sales. You could upgrade using Emirates Skywards miles, or if you’re feeling really confident, try asking at the airport.

Emirates abides by its baggage rules as much as any other airline, which means it's best to always ensure you're within its allowance limits. Weigh and measure your luggage in good time before heading to the airport so you don't have any nasty surprises at check in.
