How can you make the most of easyJet’s hand luggage allowances?
Read our seven suggestions to help you pack smarter and avoid the luggage charges.
1. Buy new luggage
If you’re the sort of traveler who tries (and fails) to outsmart the airlines by squeezing as much as you can into the overhead locker, it might be time to simply invest in some proper cabin luggage. Buying a new cabin bag in line with international hand luggage rules could save you lots of money in the long run. You’ll save yourself the hassle of the ‘will they/won’t they take my luggage off me?’ question, as well as some pretty hefty excess cabin baggage fines.
Where can I buy the best hand luggage bag?
There are some great options out there, including ones with fitted GPS and phone chargers. The easyJet hand luggage size is 56 x 45 x 25cm, including handles and wheels, so make sure it’s in line with this. Read our article on the luggage you didn’t know you needed until now for baggage inspiration.
2. Keep calm and carry on with your carry on
There are other ways to help you make sure your bag makes it onto the plane and doesn’t get taken off you at the gate to go in the hold. If you’re at the back of the check-in queue and everyone in front of you has packed everything but the kitchen sink in their hand luggage, there’s a chance easyJet will take your bag and put it in the hold. You won’t have to pay for this but you will have to hang around at the baggage carousel at the other end waiting for it to reappear. If having your hand luggage with you is really important, turn up and check in early – two to three hours for international flights and up to 90 minutes for domestic. Always check the airport website so you don’t get caught unawares at security. And check out our article on 10 things not to take in your hand luggage.
3. Pack smart and light for your holiday
If you must take your hair straighteners on your beach holiday, buy a miniature version. And while you’re at it, swap out your four pairs of heels for some more versatile day-to-evening ballet flats. Even an expert packer will admit they don’t get it right first time; as a general rule, once you think you’re done, cut what you’ve got by at least a third. Unless you’re traveling to the back and beyond, most places have shops where you could buy space-hungry items such as towels (or buy a microfiber travel towel). And roll your clothes, don’t fold. It makes packing much easier, we promise!
4. Check your bag in the hold
If you’re going to take a risk and try to secretly exceed easyJet’s hand luggage rules, be prepared to face the consequences. If you’re caught, you’re better off just admitting defeat and checking your bag into the hold. If you try and fight them on it, it’s very unlikely you’ll win.
How much does easyJet charge for hold luggage?
If you book it in online in advance when you book your flight, you’ll pay between Dh60 and Dh140 for up to 20kg of luggage. But if you’re forced to check your cabin bags because they don’t meet easyJet’s luggage rules, you’ll have to part with between Dh145 and Dh200.
5. Become a member
If you fly regularly with easyJet you should check out its easyJet Plus program (Dh780 a year). You’ll get an allocated seat every time you fly, priority boarding and an extra cabin bag that must fit underneath the seat in front. If you’re not one for commitment, buy an easyJet FLEXI ticket instead.
What are the benefits of the easyJet FLEXI fare ticket?
An extra piece of cabin baggage measuring no more than 45 x 36 x 20cm. You can also change your flight and pull it forward by up to a week or push it back by up to three weeks, as long as the new ticket is the same or a lesser value.
6. Wear your luggage
No, we don’t mean piling on five sweaters and multiple pairs of pants, we mean investing in a piece of ‘wearable luggage’ such as this aptly named Stuffa jacket! It allows you to carry your belongings on your person, freeing up precious space in your cabin baggage. Consider it a travel investment!
7. Book another airline
easyJet’s cabin baggage allowance is actually fairly generous. You’re also allowed an umbrella, shawl, overcoat, a single bag of duty free goods and a set of crutches/walking stick on top of your regular hand luggage bag. But if you want to compare to other budget airlines, check out our guide to Ryanair’s cabin baggage rules.
Budget airlines in the UAE include flydubai, which flies to more than 90 destinations, and Air Arabia, which flies out of Sharjah.
